San Marcos, Texas might be a little far from the big city, but there is definitely enough entertainment to fill a weekend with exuberance and adventure. Smack dab in the middle of the Hill Country lies Texas State University, two huge outlet malls, Comal and Guadalupe River, and, not to mention, all the great eateries. This town creates a unique, laid back atmosphere filled with dance halls, movie theaters, and the infamous tubing along the river. All of which is ready for you to take in and enjoy.

LYD spent a peaceful Saturday afternoon relishing in the Texas heat, floating the Guadalupe River with our closest friends, and meeting interesting people as we floated passed them. After spending hours in the sun, all we wanted to do was eat a relaxing, casual dinner. Luckily, the town of San Marcos provided many choices. LYD happened to come across Palmer’s Restaurant Bar and Courtyard in downtown where comfort food was plentiful and served with pizzazz, the atmosphere brought relaxation and enjoyable conversation, and the staff was ready to serve our hungry souls.
As you walk into Palmer’s, you will be intrigued by the different décor in each room. LYD sat in the library where the walls were decorated with colorful, but simple paintings and shelves were filled with eclectic books. LYD’s favorite book happened to be the menu. As you peruse through the menu you are delighted see the everyday food classics like pork shops, steaks, and salads. Also, don’t hold back on the excitement of the Tex-Mex favorites like chili relleno with rice and beans or the stuffed avocado. All of which looks and tastes delish!
A must have is Palmer’s pork chops! Two succulent bone-in meaty pork chops, marinated in a sweet, honey jalapeño sauce laid on top of a bed of soft and buttery mashers. The mashers were sprinkled with sea salt and dusted with cracked black pepper adding a tasty side to the melt in your mouth, fork tender chops. However, this dish is not done yet. Jalapeño corn adds an unexpected, but delightful kick! Kernels of corn creamed together with cheese and jalapeño. Need we say more?!? Red meat lovers beware because Palmer’s offers its signature ribeye grilled or blackened your choice. LYD chose the hand- cut grilled medium ribeye seasoned with peppercorn and dressed with Yukon mashers and fresh home- style green beans. Now, that’s an amazing comfort food classic. However, if you are looking for a healthier version of a red meat dish, try the grilled tenderloin salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Huge helpings of mixed greens tossed with sliced peppercorn crusted tenderloin medallions, roasted pecans, green beans, thinly sliced fried onions rings, and chunks of fresh feta cheese. And if that doesn’t suit your taste, try one of Palmer’s Tex-Mex version of chicken chile relleno. Spicy, roasted poblano pepper filled with smoked chicken, jack cheese, sautéed onions, fresh chopped cilantro, pecans, and sweet raisins. Sweet, salty, and spicy all in one bite!
Palmer’s Restaurant Bar and Courtyard has it all! The menu is as eclectic as the state of Texas and offers regular classics plus some twists on your favorites. Check out their patio on a cool night and sip on your cocktails outside to enjoy the greenery and peace and quiet of the small town life. Pay no mind to the weekday life you came to escape, and breathe in the fresh air off the hills of South Texas. After your decadent meal, head to the downtown San Marcos nightlife and down home entertainment found in the dance halls throughout the city. Whether it’s the college bars or Irish pub-style drinkeries that seem to call out you or even the boot- scootin’ sway of the Texas country band, there are spots all over the area that will sure get your Saturday night started right! Walk around the square and take your pick!
